Meditation on inner Light and Sound is a profound path that invites seekers to experience higher realms within. One of the most intriguing aspects of this journey is the inner Sound or “Shabd” — a vibration that transcends physical hearing, opening doors to deeper dimensions. Many meditators report hearing this inner Sound in various ways: from the right side, the left, above or even as a central, all-encompassing resonance. Understanding these variations can help deepen our meditation practice and appreciation of the journey.
Traditionally, spiritual teachers have advised meditators to focus on the inner Sound as it appears from the right side. In many mystical traditions, the right is symbolic of moving forward, representing connection to the future and higher, more subtle planes. Hearing from the right ear is thought to guide us beyond the mind and ego, into spiritual realms that bring us closer to our true Self. This “future-oriented” path encourages release from past attachments and invites us into a higher consciousness.
Hearing inner Sound from the left side is less common but has unique significance. In many teachings, the left side symbolizes the physical, the past or the realm of karmic influences. When meditators perceive inner Sound here, it may suggest messages linked to clearing old patterns or guidance for personal healing. For some, the left ear represents intuitive connections to the heart, intuition or even a bridge to one’s inner guides or teachers, encouraging inner reconciliation and acceptance.
Advanced meditators often report an experience of Sound that seems to come from “above”. In spiritual practice, “above” doesn’t imply a literal direction but rather a symbolic connection to higher consciousness. This experience points toward realms beyond the material, where ego and duality fall away. Hearing Sound from above aligns with the experience of divine guidance or connection to the source itself, helping meditators move beyond the mind’s confines.
At deeper levels of meditation, the Sound may be experienced as emanating from a central point or even filling the entire space of one’s awareness. This central Sound is seen as a vibration beyond duality, representing the oneness of all existence. In this phase, the Sound has no fixed location; it’s all-encompassing, inviting a state of unity with the cosmos and a profound connection to one’s highest self. Many describe this stage as an experience of the “eternal” where time, space and self dissolve.
Whether perceived from the right, left, above or as a central vibration, the inner Sound serves as a guide on our spiritual journey, inviting us into higher states of awareness and consciousness. Each direction represents a unique aspect of the soul’s path, offering insights that enrich our practice. House of Empathy encourages all meditators to explore these dimensions, knowing that the Sound, in its various expressions, brings us ever closer to the experience of unity and pure love.
